28mm Edition I Manhattan is a visually authentic, intoxicating and emotional rollercoaster ride. A camera, a 28mm lens and the closeness of the photographer allow the observer to submerge into a never-seen-before world. The book is a piece of real life. A slice of life.
A visual stock-take of an unstoppable inner state that frequently ends in social isolation. It is the first of a series that focuses on the individual districts of New York. The book series begins with Manhattan, the American synonym for wealth and success. If you take a close look, you can see it, the fight for survival, without knowing how to eke out the next month. Everyone is occupied with themselves and their lives, there is widespread exhaustion. Anger and anxiety coupled with an unshakeable will to survive.“New York was a city where you could be frozen to death in the midst of a busy street and nobody would notice.” Bob Dylan
In high-contrast and vividly coloured photos, the photographer records the state of a modern society, which is shattering at its own standards. Many of the photos appear to be picturesque, the colours and contrasts are captivating thanks to the lighting situations chosen. Baldessarini got extremely close to the people in the course of this project and developed a technique that enabled him to portray the people without them realizing. The entire book was compiled without a viewfinder and autofocus, giving it a different kind of depth and authenticity.A visual theme that manages without many words distinguishes 28 MM. A product that speaks through its photos and functions almost entirely without words. One which focuses on the substance, of continuing the language of street photography with a new visual dialogue.A homage to the poetry of everyday life with all its stories and their advocates such as Gilden, Webb or Lorca di Corcia.
